New Delhi: Security forces have recovered a significant cache of weapons and ammunition near the India Pakistan border in Punjab, dealing a major blow to an alleged cross border arms smuggling network aimed at disrupting peace in the state. The recovery was made in the border area of Narot Jaimal Singh in Pathankot district during a coordinated operation by Punjab Police and central intelligence agencies.
Officials said the seized consignment is believed to have been smuggled from across the border with the intention of fuelling terror related activities and creating instability in the region. The haul includes three AK 47 assault rifles along with five magazines, two pistols of Turkish and Chinese origin, two additional magazines, and 98 live cartridges.
According to investigators, the nature and quantity of the weapons indicate a well planned attempt to supply arms to local modules operating on behalf of handlers based outside the country. Intelligence inputs have suggested the involvement of Pakistan based terrorist Harvinder Singh Rinda, a criminal turned extremist who is believed to be coordinating such operations with the support of Pakistan’s intelligence establishment.
Senior police officials said the recovery was made following specific intelligence inputs, and further investigation is underway to identify the intended recipients of the weapons. Security agencies believe the consignment may have been meant for sleeper cells or newly activated operatives in Punjab.
In response to the seizure, surveillance has been intensified across the border belt and adjoining districts. Multiple search operations have been launched in suspected areas to track down individuals linked to the smuggling network. Raids are also being conducted at various locations to uncover logistical support systems and safe houses used by those involved.
Authorities said coordination between state police and central agencies has been further strengthened to dismantle cross border terror infrastructure. Officials added that efforts are focused on identifying the complete chain, from handlers and couriers to local facilitators, to prevent similar attempts in the future.
The seizure comes amid heightened security measures in Punjab, with agencies remaining on high alert to counter infiltration, arms smuggling, and terror financing. Officials reiterated that strict vigilance along the border and intelligence driven operations will continue to safeguard peace and security in the state.
