UP: In a shocking incident, an Indian Army jawan was tied to a pole and brutally assaulted by toll booth staff in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, after an altercation over toll charges. Four staff members have been arrested following the circulation of a video that captured the assault.
The soldier, identified as Kapil Kavad of the Rajput Regiment, was on his way to Delhi airport to catch a flight to his posting in Srinagar after a holiday at home. Kapil, along with his cousin, got stuck in a long queue at the Bhuni toll plaza. Worried about missing his flight, he stepped out to speak to the toll staff, which led to an argument.
The altercation quickly escalated, with at least five toll booth employees seen thrashing Kapil and his cousin. In the video that went viral, the jawan is pinned to a pole, his hands twisted behind his back, while staff members beat him with sticks and hurl abuses.
Rakesh Kumar Mishra, Superintendent of Police (Rural), confirmed that a case has been registered at Sarurpur police station based on a complaint by the soldier’s family.
“Kapil is a serving soldier of the Indian Army. He was returning to his post when the incident occurred. After reviewing CCTV and viral video footage, four accused have been arrested. Teams are working to nab the remaining culprits,” Mishra said.
According to preliminary reports, the argument began when Kapil reportedly informed toll staff that his village fell under an area exempt from toll charges. The dispute snowballed into a violent attack, leaving the soldier injured.
The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with many demanding strict action against the accused and better protection for serving personnel.
