New Delhi:
In the midst of intense speculation ahead of the Delhi Assembly polls, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal has categorically denied claims by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that he might contest from two seats. Kejriwal, who has been the MLA from the New Delhi constituency since 2013, reiterated his commitment to contesting only from this seat in the upcoming elections scheduled for February 5.
Kejriwal’s clarification came in response to assertions by BJP leaders, including Parvesh Verma, who is contesting against Kejriwal in the New Delhi seat. Verma had suggested that Kejriwal might opt for a second, supposedly “safer” seat, due to concerns about his chances in the New Delhi constituency. BJP leader Amit Malviya also weighed in, questioning Kejriwal’s motives and suggesting that he was making baseless allegations about voter list issues to deflect attention from his own electoral woes.
However, Kejriwal was unequivocal in his stance. “I will contest from only one seat,” he stated during a press conference, dispelling any rumors about considering an alternative constituency. This assurance comes as Kejriwal prepares to face off against Verma and Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit in the highly contested New Delhi seat.
The New Delhi constituency, known for its high profile and historical significance, has been a stronghold for Kejriwal, who has won the seat in the 2013, 2015, and 2020 Assembly elections. Despite internal surveys and media reports suggesting a tight race, Kejriwal remains confident in his ability to retain the seat.
The Delhi Assembly polls, set to take place on February 5 with the counting of votes on February 8, are anticipated to be a fierce battle between the AAP, BJP, and Congress. Kejriwal’s commitment to the New Delhi seat underscores his determination to continue representing the constituency that has been his political base for over a decade.
