New Delhi: In a bold move towards securing the hosting rights for the 2036 Summer Olympics, the state of Gujarat has initiated a comprehensive land acquisition process in Ahmedabad. This strategic initiative involves acquiring over 650 acres of land near the Narendra Modi Stadium to construct critical infrastructure such as the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave and Olympic Village. The process signifies a significant step in India’s official bid, submitted last October, to host the Games across multiple cities, including Bhopal, Goa, Mumbai, and Pune.
Hosting the Olympics in 2036 comes with a hefty price tag, estimated to be between Rs 34,700 crore and Rs 64,000 crore—exceeding the costs of the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has formally expressed India’s interest to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), advancing to the Continuous Dialogue phase of the host selection process.
Key to this development is the acquisition of land currently used by three ashrams: Sant Shree Asaram Ashram, Bhartiya Seva Samaj, and Sadashiv Pragya Mandal. The government is working to provide alternative sites or compensation for these trusts, ensuring legal proceedings are followed meticulously. More than 10 countries have shown interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics, but India’s bid is making significant strides with active government support.
