New Delhi: The future of the Asia Cup 2025 hangs in the balance as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly threatened to boycott any resolution passed at the upcoming Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Annual General Meeting (AGM) if it is held in Dhaka as scheduled on July 24.
A source familiar with the matter stated that the BCCI has requested a change of venue due to ongoing concerns in Bangladesh but has received no response from the ACC. The ACC is currently headed by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief and Pakistan’s interior minister, Mohsin Naqvi, who is said to be exerting “unnecessary pressure” on India to attend the meeting in Dhaka.
“Asia Cup can only proceed if the meeting venue is changed. If Mohsin Naqvi insists on holding it in Dhaka, the BCCI will boycott any resolutions passed at the AGM,” the source confirmed.
The Asia Cup, a six-team tournament to be played in the T20 format, is expected to be hosted by India, though the schedule and venue remain unconfirmed. The tournament is rumored to be slated for September, but the uncertainty around the AGM could further delay critical planning decisions.
India recently postponed its bilateral tour of Bangladesh from August 2025 to September 2026 due to the situation in Bangladesh, a decision reached mutually with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
Tensions between India and Pakistan have long complicated tournament logistics. In 2023, India declined to travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup, resulting in Sri Lanka hosting India’s matches as part of a hybrid model. Similarly, during the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, India opted to play its fixtures at a neutral venue, avoiding travel to Pakistan.
Earlier this year, speculation emerged that India had pulled out of both the Men’s Asia Cup and the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup, citing strained diplomatic relations with Pakistan. However, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed the reports as “speculative and imaginary,” stating that no such decision had been made.
As tensions continue to mount within the ACC, the Asia Cup’s fate remains uncertain. India’s strong stance on the meeting location raises the possibility of further disruptions to the continental tournament, unless a compromise is reached in the coming days.
