Gujarat: Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on Sunday hailed the remarkable growth in the Asiatic lion population, calling it an “astounding success” and a global example of wildlife conservation. Speaking on World Lion Day, Yadav announced that the population has risen to 891, a significant leap from 674 in 2020.
Highlighting the recovery journey of the Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica), Yadav noted that the population has grown from 284 in 1990 to 891 in 2025 — a 32% jump in just five years and more than 70% growth over the past decade.
“It is a matter of immense national pride that the only place in the world where the Asiatic lion exists today is Gir, Gujarat,” he said.
Yadav credited the success to the “collective will” of the Gujarat government, local communities like the Maldharis, and the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who prioritised Project Lion both as Chief Minister and later as Prime Minister.
“If one wants to see an example of wildlife conservation, they should look at Gir, the state’s efforts, and the lifestyle of local communities,” he remarked.
Marking the occasion, Yadav and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel led celebrations at the Barda Wildlife Sanctuary and unveiled a ₹180 crore project to enhance lion conservation and eco-tourism facilities.Once on the verge of extinction, Asiatic lions are now thriving in Gujarat’s Saurashtra region. They are distinct from their African counterparts — smaller in size, with less-developed manes in males, and a distinctive skin fold along their abdomen.
As a keystone species, their survival is crucial for maintaining ecological balance. However, their restricted range makes them vulnerable to disease outbreaks and habitat pressures, underscoring the need for sustained protection.
