Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam has turned dire, with over 5.35 lakh people impacted across 22 districts and the death toll rising to 11 due to floods and landslides. Two individuals remain missing, and forecasts indicate more heavy rainfall in the coming days, complicating ongoing relief and rescue operations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday to assess the situation. In a post on X, Sarma said, “The Hon’ble PM expressed concern and assured full support from the Central Government for our relief and rehabilitation efforts. Grateful for his guidance and unwavering support to the people of Assam.”
The crisis has been fuelled by relentless rainfall in Assam and neighbouring regions, causing major rivers such as the Brahmaputra, Barak, and Kopili to rise above danger levels. Embankment breaches, inundated roads, and infrastructure collapse have added to the chaos, displacing thousands. Sribhumi district alone accounts for over 1.94 lakh flood-affected residents.
Chief Minister Sarma is expected to visit the heavily affected Cachar district, as the state ramps up emergency response measures. Across Assam, 165 relief camps are currently sheltering over 31,000 displaced individuals, while 157 relief distribution centres are operational. However, transport networks have been severely hit, with road, rail, and ferry services disrupted across flood-affected zones.
Agricultural losses are mounting, with nearly 12,610 hectares of crops submerged and at least 94 animals reported washed away in the past 24 hours. Damage to embankments, roads, bridges, and power infrastructure is widespread, with several areas still inaccessible.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati has issued an ‘orange alert’ for districts including Dhubri, South Salmara Mankachar, Goalpara, and Kokrajhar, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and extremely heavy rainfall. Eleven other districts are under a ‘yellow alert’ as the state braces for continued rain.
As conditions worsen, the Assam government is intensifying rescue and relief operations, but weather challenges and infrastructural damage are significantly hampering efforts. Authorities continue to urge residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and cooperate with evacuation and aid teams.
