Assam: In a move to recognize the transformative impact of Ratan Tata’s investments in Assam, the state government has decided to name its upcoming Electronic City in Jagiroad after the late industrialist. This decision was made during a recent Cabinet meeting, reflecting the significant role Mr. Tata played in shaping Assam’s industrial landscape. The Electronic City, set to host India’s first semiconductor plant, marks a pivotal moment in Assam’s development as a major semiconductor hub.
The announcement by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted Mr. Tata’s bold decision to establish a semiconductor plant in the state, which has been a catalyst for attracting further investments from top industrialists. “In recognition of the contribution of the Tata group and late Ratan Tata, the state cabinet has decided to name the entire area covering the semiconductor plant, electronic park, and proposed Electronic City township as Ratan Tata Electronic City,” Mr. Sarma explained. He noted that without Mr. Tata’s initiative, the state would not have seen such a robust response from other industrialists.
The upcoming Electronic City will be the Northeast’s first, focusing on semiconductors and advanced electronics. This development is part of a broader initiative to establish Assam as a major player in the semiconductor industry, with a groundbreaking Rs 27,000 crore chip assembly plant already underway. Mr. Tata had a long-standing association with Assam, where the Tata Group made significant investments in the tea industry. Additionally, he was recognized for his contributions to cancer care in the state, having envisioned projects to support low-income patients.
In 2022, Mr. Tata was conferred with the Assam Baibhav, the state’s highest civilian honor, acknowledging his enduring impact on Assam’s development.
