MARGAO: Madganvcho Awaaz and youth leader Prabhav Naik has strongly criticized PWD Minister Digambar Kamat over the proposed demolition of the existing structure at the Margao Municipal Garden, calling it a direct assault on faith and tradition.
Naik alleged that from the Shree Ganesh Pandal controversy to the recent developments near Shree Ganesh Temple at Aquem Ring Road, the minister has “crossed every line” by attempting to demolish the revered pooja venue of the Margao Municipal Sarvajanik Shree Ganeshotsav to make way for a two-storey structure.
Reacting to the tender issued by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation worth ₹3.96 crore for demolition of the existing structure and construction of a two-storey building, Naik termed the move insensitive and unacceptable. He questioned the intent behind pushing the project without taking local residents and devotees into confidence.
Naik further stated that the Margao Municipal Garden holds immense heritage and emotional significance for the people of Margao. According to him, for generations the garden has served as a venue for cultural gatherings, childhood memories, and community bonding, making it an inseparable part of the town’s identity.
Accusing Digambar Kamat of ignoring public sentiments, Naik said the government was prioritizing unnecessary construction over preservation of cultural and religious spaces. He also expressed apprehension that the proposed two-storey structure could eventually be allotted to a bar and restaurant or even a dance bar.
Reaffirming his stand, Naik said Madganvcho Awaaz will oppose any attempt to alter the iconic garden and warned that citizens would unite to protect the heritage, faith, and identity of Margao for present and future generations.
