COLVALE: A 41-year-old man lost his life after a car plunged into a water canal at Kailas Nagar, Assonora on Sunday evening. The driver, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, has been booked for rash and negligent driving.
According to a complaint lodged by PSI Prakash Ghadi of Colvale Police Station, the incident occurred on November 9, 2025, around 6:30 pm.
The accused, Ritesh Rohidas Shirgaonkar (35), a resident of Deulwado, Shirgao-Bicholim, was reportedly driving a white Zen car (GA-02-J-0785) in a rash and negligent manner on a hilly stretch near a water canal.
Despite being aware of the risk, Shirgaonkar allegedly continued driving under the influence of alcohol, causing the car to veer off and fall into the canal. The vehicle drowned along with both occupants.
While Shirgaonkar managed to survive, his co-passenger Dipesh Dilip Mandrekar (41), a resident of Kailas Nagar, Assonora, drowned and died in the mishap.
Colvale Police have registered a case against Shirgaonkar under relevant sections of the IPC and Motor Vehicles Act for rash and negligent driving causing death and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Further investigation is underway.
