New Delhi: P. T. Usha, president of the Indian Olympic Association, has called for an athlete first approach in sports administration, stressing that policies and decision making must prioritise the preparation, welfare and development of athletes.
Speaking on the third day of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Sports Journalists Federation of India annual convention, Usha said that the future of Indian sport should be guided by governance that places athletes at the centre of every decision. Addressing members of the sports media, she said administrators and sporting bodies must focus on ensuring the best possible environment for athletes to train, compete and succeed.
Usha also reflected on the transformation of India’s sporting ecosystem in recent years. She noted that improved infrastructure, scientific training methods and stronger institutional backing have significantly enhanced the ability of Indian athletes to compete at international levels.
According to her, the real strength of Indian sport lies at the grassroots level. She emphasised that villages, towns and schools across the country hold immense untapped talent. Continued investment in coaching programmes, sports infrastructure and systematic talent identification will help the country produce world class athletes on a consistent basis.
During a panel discussion at the convention, Raghuram Iyer, chief executive officer of the Indian Olympic Association, said India is currently at an important turning point in its sporting journey. He observed that growing ambition, investment and participation are shaping the country’s future in global sport.
Iyer stressed the need to build a comprehensive sporting ecosystem that encourages greater community level participation. Once a broad base of athletes is established, he said, the most promising performers must receive the necessary resources and support to reach elite international standards.
He also highlighted India’s increasing focus on hosting major international sporting events to strengthen infrastructure. The country has secured the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and is also preparing a bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics.
The Grand Sports Conclave formed a major highlight of the convention, bringing together administrators, corporate leaders, broadcasters and members of the sports media to discuss the future direction of Indian sport.
