MARGAO: A stabbing on Margao station road on Monday evening has intensified residents’ concerns over the worsening law-and-order situation in the area, coming just hours after locals raised alarms about rising disorder on the busy stretch.
According to police, an unidentified assailant stabbed a man in the abdomen during a quarrel, allegedly using a knife. The injured man was first taken to South Goa District Hospital and later shifted to Goa Medical College, Bambolim, after his condition was declared critical.
Margao Police have begun investigating the case and are awaiting a forensic examination of the spot.
Residents said the incident is the latest example of escalating criminal activity along the station road, where petty thefts, late-night drinking and nuisance by anti-social elements have become common. Several locals expressed frustration that the police presence in the area remains minimal.
“We never used to see such fights or thefts here. Now drunkards and troublemakers loiter around every evening. They behave like they fear no one,” a resident said, adding that police occasionally appear only after major incidents and fail to conduct routine foot patrols.
Earlier in the day, before the stabbing occurred, local resident had already voiced distress over the growing disorder. “During our morning walks, we see drunk men sprawled on the roadside and creating a nuisance. We have repeatedly requested authorities to clear the area, but nothing has changed,” he said.
Calling the road the city’s gateway, he had warned that neglecting public safety would leave visitors with negative impressions of Margao. “This is the first and last stretch many people see. Authorities need to act before the situation worsens further,” he added.
