Panaji: There are attempts to rewrite the Constitution of India, and people of this country must unite against this move, said Aldona MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira.
He was speaking on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanthi organised by the State Congress Party on Sunday.
Also present were State Congress President Amit Patkar, vice president Tulio D’Souza, state Congress general secretary Vijay Bhike and other workers.
Ferreira said that Babasaheb Ambedkar faced a lot of problems in his childhood due to acceptability as he came from a particular background.
“He was fighting for equality and recognition. He laid the foundation for the Constitution of India. Today we are in danger, there are attempts to rewrite the Constitution. They want to wipe out their legacy. They want to change the country. They want to bring back the dark days of the Hitler again. We must be united to save the principles of our founding fathers like Ambedkar to save the country. We celebrate Ambedkar Jayanthi to celebrate his ideals and remember whatever he has done for our nation. He fought adversities in bringing a good Constitution, getting rid of the imperial regime and bringing India to what it is today,” he said.
Patkar said the Modi government is trying to destroy people’s rights.
“There is no freedom of speech. They are trying to divide people, and take away our freedom of speech. We can honour Ambedkar, who gave us the Constitution, by voting out the BJP government that is trying to finish the Constitution. Only then we can save and protect the Constitution, ” he said.
Bhike said that the Congress party is the only option to save Goa’s identity, culture and heritage.
