Sydney: As the cricket world sets its sights on the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Australia is poised to make history by reclaiming the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since the 2014-15 season. With a commanding 2-1 lead in the series, Captain Pat Cummins is adamant that the team’s strategy remains unchanged – to win the final Test against India.
Cummins emphasized the team’s consistent performance, saying, “We’ve shown that we’ve been the front-runners, and the aim again this week is to keep it up.” Despite the favorable position, Cummins acknowledged that there are areas for improvement, particularly in the batting department. “There are times when we would have liked to score more runs,” he admitted, reflecting on the recent Test in Melbourne where Australia could have extended their lead to 400-500 runs.
The SCG pitch, known for its unique characteristics, presents a challenge that Cummins is well aware of. “It’s a little bit different from the traditional SCG wicket,” he noted. “The teams were happy with the wicket this year, which felt like there was a bit on offer for the bowlers, but also runs to be scored.” The weather, too, could play a crucial role, with only day five of the Sydney Test expected to be affected by rain.
Indian pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been a significant threat throughout the series, and Cummins is aware of the challenge he poses. “He’s tough to face,” Cummins said, adding that he hopes to face Bumrah later in the day when the bowler might be less potent. Cummins has also made significant strides in his batting, attributing his success to a more relaxed approach. “I try not to overthink it. I just focus on scoring areas, playing good shots, and not worrying too much about the consequences,” he explained.
With the legacy of the Australian team on the line, especially for the experienced players, Cummins and his team are determined to secure the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. A win or a draw at the SCG would be enough to achieve this, marking a significant milestone in their cricketing journey.
