New Delhi: At least seven people lost their lives and five others were injured after a massive avalanche struck the Srinagar–Leh Highway on Friday, trapping several passenger vehicles under heavy snow and debris.
The avalanche occurred on the Zojila Pass on the Ladakh side of the route. Following the incident, traffic on the highway was completely halted as rescue teams rushed to the spot to assist victims and clear the blocked road.
Authorities immediately launched large scale rescue and clearance operations. Teams from the Border Roads Organisation along with local police personnel began removing snow and debris while searching for any additional victims who might still be trapped.
The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh said the situation was being closely monitored and directed district authorities and senior police officials from Kargil to reach the site without delay and coordinate relief efforts. Disaster response teams and other government agencies were also placed on high alert to manage the emergency.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh confirmed the casualties and expressed condolences to the families of those who died in the disaster. He said the injured were receiving necessary medical assistance and support.
The Srinagar Leh Highway, commonly known as National Highway 1, stretches approximately 434 kilometres and serves as a crucial road link between Srinagar and Leh. The route passes through Zojila Pass at an altitude of around 11,575 feet and is known for its scenic views as well as difficult terrain.
Due to heavy snowfall and harsh weather conditions, this high altitude stretch frequently faces disruptions during winter. To address the issue of seasonal closures, construction of the Zojila Tunnel is currently underway. Once completed, the 14.2 kilometre long tunnel will provide a safer, year round road connection between Ladakh and the rest of the country.
