PANAJI: The sixth edition of the Ramakant Verlekar Champions Trophy concluded with a commanding performance from Panjim Gymkhana Members League Kings, who defeated Margao Cricket Club Superstars to secure their fourth consecutive title under the floodlights at the Rajendra Prasad Stadium in Margao.
Although the much anticipated T20 clash was expected to deliver a closely fought contest, the final turned into a one sided affair. Despite the lack of tension on the field, the stands remained lively as cricket enthusiasts gathered in large numbers to celebrate the game and the growing tradition of the annual tournament.
The competition, organised by the Sunita Verlekar Foundation, once again brought together experienced senior cricketers and emerging young players. The event continues to promote both healthy competition and camaraderie between two of Goa’s well known cricketing institutions.
Batting first after losing the toss, MCL Superstars suffered an early collapse that set the tone for the match. Within the first 14 deliveries they had already lost two wickets with only 23 runs on the board. The situation worsened when PGML captain Mukhtar Kadri struck twice in successive balls, leaving MCL struggling at 23 for three. Another wicket fell at the start of the fourth over, and the pressure quickly mounted on the batting side.
Frequent setbacks and poor running between the wickets further dented MCL’s chances, including two avoidable run outs. Captain Amod Borkar fought a lone battle with a determined 27, but the lack of support meant MCL could only manage to cross the 100 run mark late in the innings, eventually posting a modest total of 112.
PGML Kings began the chase cautiously after an early wicket, with tight bowling briefly creating pressure. However, Avishkar More and Abhijit Bhandare soon stabilised the innings. A dropped catch in the slips proved costly as More capitalised on the reprieve and accelerated the scoring.
More’s explosive 51 off just 26 balls turned the match decisively in PGML’s favour. The Kings comfortably chased down the target in 15 overs, sparking celebrations and fireworks as they lifted the trophy once again.
More was named Man of the Match and Best Batsman, while Mukhtar Kadri received the Best Bowler award. Heramb Parab was recognised as Impact Player and Aditya Angle as Best Fielder. The Sunita Verlekar Foundation also awarded a cricket scholarship to young Goan talent Uzma Shaikh, highlighting its commitment to supporting future cricketers.
