PANAJI: In a landmark decision, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that September 23 will be observed as Ayurveda Day, coinciding with the autumnal equinox—a celestial event representing balance, change, and harmony.
The move has been warmly received by Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant, who is also a qualified Ayurveda practitioner. Calling the announcement “historic,” Dr. Sawant expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for highlighting India’s traditional system of medicine on a globally significant date.
“Ayurveda, the science of life, continues to guide us with its timeless principle — ‘Swasthasya swasthya rakshanam, aturasya vikara prashamanam’ — which means the preservation of health in the healthy and the treatment of ailments in the sick,” Dr. Sawant said in an official statement.
He added that celebrating Ayurveda Day on the equinox should serve as an inspiration for collective efforts to incorporate Ayurveda’s holistic values into daily life, promoting not only physical but also mental and spiritual well-being.
The announcement is part of the central government’s broader initiative to promote traditional Indian systems of medicine and position the country as a global center for holistic health and wellness.
