New Delhi: Ayush Badoni has been named in the Indian cricket team for the ODI series against New Zealand, stepping in as a replacement for the injured Washington Sundar. The 26-year-old all-rounder, who has shown promise in domestic cricket and the IPL, will join the squad ahead of the second ODI in Rajkot.
Badoni has displayed flashes of talent, scoring 329 runs in 11 innings during the 2025 IPL season. However, his recent Vijay Hazare Trophy performance was less impactful, with just 16 runs in three innings. Despite this, his coach, Sarandeep Singh, expressed confidence in Badoni’s readiness for international cricket, citing consistent performances over the past two years and improvements in his bowling.
The all-rounder was practicing at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru when he received the call, prompting him to leave his state team to join the national squad. While he will miss Delhi’s crucial quarterfinal match against Vidarbha, the call-up marks an important milestone in his career.
Fans have shared mixed reactions on social media, with some highlighting his IPL achievements and others questioning the timing of the selection. Badoni’s prior experience with Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL and his domestic career provide him with valuable exposure, which selectors hope will translate into strong performances on the international stage.
This call-up introduces fresh talent to the Indian squad and adds depth to the team for the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand, giving Badoni an opportunity to prove himself at the highest level.
