Panaji: Panaji Baale Tigers and Manas Mavericks produced clinical performances to register convincing victories in the Panaji Gymkhana organised PGML 5.0 Cricket Tournament on Sunday at the Campal ground in Panaji. Baale Tigers outplayed Dempo Challengers by nine wickets in the morning fixture, while Manas Mavericks defeated Desserts N More Avengers by five wickets in the afternoon encounter.
The opening match of the day turned into a completely one sided contest after Dempo Challengers opted to bat first. Their batting line up failed to cope with disciplined bowling and they were dismissed for a modest 70 runs in 15.3 overs. Sunny Kamat offered some resistance with 25 runs and Vedant Naik added 14, but the rest of the order collapsed cheaply. For Baale Tigers, Prasad Patil, Dhiraj Phadte and Nilesh Bhonsle delivered impressive spells and claimed three wickets each, while Sandeep Dahad supported with one wicket.
Chasing a small target, Baale Tigers never looked under pressure. Dhiraj Phadte played an aggressive knock of 38 runs and Sandeep Dahad remained unbeaten on 30 as the team reached 71 for one in just 8.4 overs to seal a comfortable win.
The second match followed a similar pattern despite Desserts N More Avengers posting a better total. Batting first, they scored 152 for five in the allotted 20 overs. Opener Ojas Mehta led the innings with a steady 55 off 47 balls, Muktiar Kadri contributed 22 and Suraj Hirani provided a late flourish with an unbeaten 21 from eight deliveries. Vikram Chodankar was the standout bowler for Manas Mavericks with two wickets.
Manas Mavericks lost opener Vijay for zero early in the chase, but the setback did not affect their momentum. Om Fadte played a crucial innings of 46 from 27 balls and Sahil Metri added 36 to keep the chase on track. The team also benefited from 27 extras and reached 153 for five in 17 overs to complete a strong victory.
