MARGAO: The former Sports Minister today has criticized the state government for renting stadiums for weddings and other private functions.
Babu was reacting to the recent allowance of a wedding function at Manohar Parrikar Sports Complex at Navelim.
“Stadiums were built for National Games to foster sports and so that Goa youth get encouraged towards sports,” said Azgoankar.
He further said that it was wrong on the part of the Govt to lend stadiums for private events rather than sports.
Manohar Parrikar Indoor Stadium in Navelim has become a centre of controversy after a wedding reception held last weekend caused damage to the badminton court.
Athletes and sports enthusiasts have criticised the mismanagement of the post-event cleanup, with scratches on the expensive wooden flooring and debris strewn about.
Images posted by attentive sports enthusiasts showed the aftermath, with event staff quickly disassembling decorations the next day. A notification indicated the stadium’s closure from August 23 to 25, however, visitors on the morning of August 25 found it in disarray.
A group of sports fans intends to file a Public Interest Litigation and submit complaints with both the Sports Minister and stadium administrators in order to prevent future harm and keep the facility functioning properly.
Speaking further, Babu said that if the people of Goa do not want Sunburn then it should take place. He said that Sunburn brings in rich tourists and such tourists are required to boost tourism.
“Govt should act and stop drugs at sunburn,” he added.
