PANAJI: The Goa Police has ordered a preliminary inquiry against police inspector Mohan Gaude, who oversees the Mardol police station, for failing to detain the “co-accused” in the case, in order to gain more insight into the alleged police failings following the terrible traffic accident in Banastarim that claimed the lives of three people.
Director General of Police Jaspal Singh gave the directive in this case on Wednesday. Nelson Albuquerque, superintendent of police at headquarters, will handle the initial investigation.
According to sources, an investigation has been ordered to determine the details and reasons why the ‘co-accused’ in the case was not arrested.
The criminal branch detained the ‘dummy driver’ Ganesh Lamani and the putative co-accused Amit Palekar on August 31.
Palekar was accused of attempting to plant a dummy driver. Ad interim bail was granted to both on August 31 and was later confirmed on September 4.
The Mardol police, who had been cited by the court in its bail ruling, investigation of the accident case before the Goa police handed it off to the criminal branch.
“The material on record makes it crystal clear that all the offences namely destruction of evidence, giving false information, harbouring real offender etc, were committed in the presence of the in-charge of the Mardol PS, and the police did nothing. The culprits were honourably and mysteriously allowed to retreat from police station. This is alarming,” the court had observed.
The Goa police requested the preliminary investigation in response to the court’s observations. investigation of the accident case before the Goa police handed it off to the criminal branch.
