New Delhi: The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) on Friday announced the launch of professional leagues for men and women in both 5×5 and 3×3 formats, in partnership with ACG Sports. This new initiative aims to elevate Indian basketball by adopting international standards in governance, competition, and commercial management.
Jeremy Loeliger, former CEO and commissioner of Australia’s National Basketball League, has been appointed as director of ACG Sports and will lead the development of the leagues. His expertise is expected to bring world-class professionalism and structure to Indian basketball.
BFI President Aadhav Arjuna expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “This partnership is driven by vision, structured for long-term impact, and rooted in a clear understanding of what Indian basketball truly needs.”
Karan Singh, Managing Director of ACG Sports, emphasized the broader significance of basketball, saying, “Basketball represents more than just a sport – it is a vehicle for building character, leadership, and opportunity. Our decade-long journey, starting with grassroots efforts, has focused on making basketball accessible nationwide while creating professional pathways for young athletes.”
Singh also outlined the ultimate goal: “Our vision is to win medals at the Asian Games and the Olympics.”
In the coming months, the newly formed League Council will oversee league standards and operations. Key initiatives such as nationwide scouting, customized athlete development programs, and fan engagement activities will be rolled out to build a vibrant basketball culture.
The league aims to transform basketball from a niche sport into a mainstream pursuit in India by providing world-class infrastructure, holistic athlete development, and strong community support. Organizers are developing the league framework—including team structures, competition formats, player eligibility, and governance—drawing on advice from global basketball experts and stakeholders.
Further details on participation criteria, venue standards, and operational protocols will be announced in phases, paving the way for a commercially sustainable and inclusive basketball ecosystem in India.
