Curtorim: Batora United Football Club booked their spot in the quarterfinals of the 2nd Caniza Peixoto Memorial Football Tournament with a narrow 1-0 victory over St. Anthony, in a match organized by Black Arrow Boys Agxem Sports Club and played at St. Alex Church ground, Curtorim.
The opening half saw a competitive start with St. Anthony showing early promise. Lester Dias made a strong attempt in the 12th minute, shooting from the edge of the box, but Batora United’s goalkeeper Caitano Gomes reacted sharply to punch the ball away for a corner.
Batora capitalised on their first real opportunity in the 22nd minute when Alynir Fernandes found the back of the net with a calm finish, courtesy of a well-placed assist from Shown Dias. The goal proved to be decisive, as Batora took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, St. Anthony intensified their search for an equaliser. The trio of Sneden, Lester, and Celvino combined effectively in the midfield but failed to break down Batora’s disciplined defence. Goalkeeper Caitano Gomes was particularly impressive, pulling off multiple saves and commanding his area with confidence to preserve the lead.
Despite sustained pressure, St. Anthony were unable to penetrate the Batora backline, and the match ended with Batora United holding on to their solitary goal advantage.
Caitano Gomes’ stellar performance under the bar earned him the Man of the Match award, which was presented by Silvester Silveira, a member of the Agxem Sports Club.
With this victory, Batora United advance to the quarterfinals and will look to continue their strong run in the tournament.
