Dhaka: Differences have reportedly emerged within the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) over the venues allotted to the team for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, with the board sending a second letter to the International Cricket Council (ICC) seeking a review of the decision.
According to reports, the BCB has once again raised concerns about Bangladesh playing its scheduled World Cup matches in India, citing security and logistical issues. Bangladesh are slated to play four group-stage matches in the tournament, three in Kolkata and one in Mumbai, after the competition begins on February 7, 2026.
Sources familiar with the development said the latest communication reiterates the board’s earlier request to shift Bangladesh’s matches to Sri Lanka. The contents of the letter have not been made public, but it is understood to emphasise safety concerns for players and support staff during travel and stay in India.
The issue has reportedly caused a split within the BCB, with one section of the board pushing for a firm stance and continued pressure on the ICC, while another group believes the matter should be handled through dialogue and assurances rather than confrontation. Some officials have suggested that adequate security arrangements could address the concerns if Bangladesh are to play in India as scheduled.
The venue dispute comes amid strained cricketing relations following the release of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from Kolkata Knight Riders during the IPL, reportedly on the directive of the BCCI. The episode is believed to have added to unease within the BCB.
While a senior government sports adviser in Bangladesh has publicly supported the board’s position, the ICC is yet to issue a formal response to the second letter. For now, the venues remain unchanged, with the matter unresolved as preparations for the T20 World Cup continue.
