New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will announce India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025 on Tuesday, August 19 in Mumbai. According to The Times of India, the selection meeting will see captain Suryakumar Yadav fly in from the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru to join discussions.
The meeting will be followed by a press conference addressed by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, a practice that has become standard during his tenure. This squad is expected to offer key insights into the selectors’ and captain’s plans ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be hosted in the subcontinent.
“Yes, the team for the Asia Cup will be picked on August 19 in Mumbai. The selection committee meeting will be followed by a press conference by chief selector Ajit Agarkar,” a BCCI source confirmed.
India, placed in Group A, will open their campaign against UAE on September 10.
Several crucial questions remain about the makeup of this squad. One major discussion point is whether consistent performers in other formats—such as Test captain Shubman Gill, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, and ODI middle-order mainstay Shreyas Iyer—will find a place in the T20 setup.
Reports also suggest Gill could be considered for the vice-captaincy, which might mean a demotion for Axar Patel, who served as Suryakumar’s deputy in the recent home series against England. If Patel retains the role, it would signal the management’s intention to groom him as Suryakumar’s long-term successor. Other senior options like Hardik Pandya could also be discussed.
Another big question is the fitness status of Jasprit Bumrah. The pace spearhead skipped the final Test in England and left the squad early, fuelling concerns about a possible injury. Agarkar is expected to provide an update on his availability for the Asia Cup.
