PANAJI: Fresh beef returned to Goan markets this week after nearly a month, following the resumption of operations at the Goa Meat Complex Limited (GMCL) in Usgao, the state’s only government-run abattoir.
Officials said new consignments of cattle arrived from Karnataka over the weekend, with about 50 animals processed after veterinary checks. On Tuesday, traders received around six to seven tonnes of beef.
Despite the resumption, supplies fell short of demand, with many outlets running out by afternoon. The Quraishi Meat Traders Association said the current supply is inadequate and urged authorities to increase the quantity to meet consumer needs.
The disruption was caused by prolonged strikes in Karnataka and Maharashtra, which cut Goa’s daily beef supply by nearly 85 percent—from the usual 20 tonnes to just 2–5 tonnes.
