Benaulim: AAP MLA from Benaulim constituency Venzy Viegas is all set to introduce two groundbreaking private member bills in the upcoming Tenth Session of the Eighth Goa Legislative Assembly.
These initiatives, aimed at rescuing Goa’s coastal ecosystems and agricultural heritage, are a much-needed call to action over serious issues facing the state. The AAP aims to set the standard for genuine environmental stewardship in Goa with these bills.
One of the proposed legislations, the Coastal Creek Protection Bill tackles the shameful neglect of Goa’s coastal creeks, which are lifelines for irrigation, fisheries, and ecological balance. Viegas is pushing for a robust legal framework to shield these creeks from plastic pollution, encroachments, and unchecked exploitation. The bill aims to empower communities, curb environmental damage, and hold polluters accountable.
The second legislation, namely the Agricultural Land Protection Bill aims to strengthen protections for Goa’s farmlands, aligning with the Goa Amrit Kaal Agricultural Policy, 2023. With this bill, Viegas is championing a broader, modern definition of agriculture that embraces diverse crops and practices. This bill ensures Goa’s agrarian legacy thrives, supporting the state’s ambitious goal to bring 75% of its people back to farming with sustainable, tech-driven methods.
Statement from Shri Venzy Viegas:
“Goa’s creeks are suffocating, and its farmlands are slipping away, yet some local politicians have the gall to claim credit for work they never touched. These bills are AAP’s promise to fight for our environment and farmers with real solutions, not recycled promises. I appeal to all the MLAs to support these bills and back this vision for a sustainable Goa”
