BENGALURU: The city of Bengaluru is gearing up to host the 7th Indian Open Para Athletics Championship on July 11 and 12 at the iconic Kanteerava Stadium, bringing together over 262 of India’s top para athletes in a major showcase of grit, talent, and national pride.
This two-day event is more than just a sporting competition—it serves as the final selection trial for Indian athletes eyeing a spot in the national team for the World Para Athletics Championships 2025, scheduled to be held later this year in New Delhi. With India aiming for a record medal tally, the Bengaluru meet will play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s final squad.
The championship will feature a star-studded lineup, including two-time Paralympic gold medallist Sumit Antil (F64 Javelin), Parveen Kumar (High Jump, T44), Yogesh Kathuniya (Discus Throw, F56), Dharambir Nain (Club Throw, F51), Rinku Hooda (Javelin Throw, F46), and rising sprint sensation Simran (100m & 200m, T12), among others.
Calling the event a “celebration of resilience and excellence,” Devendra Jhajharia, President of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), said:
“This championship is crucial not only for selection but also for recognising the strength and determination of our para athletes. As we prepare for the World Championships in New Delhi, this meet will showcase the best of Indian para sports.”
Athletes are equally excited to compete. Yogesh Kathuniya, a silver medallist from both the Tokyo and Paris Paralympics, expressed:
“This meet is a defining moment. It motivates me and reflects how far Indian para athletics has come.”
Sprinter Simran, who clinched gold at the Kobe 2024 Asian Championships, added:
“I’m focused and ready. Competing in front of a home crowd in Bengaluru gives us a unique boost. This meet is our gateway to the world stage.”
Supported by Balmer Lawrie, Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), Leonard Cheshire Disability, and the Cognizant Foundation, the event is expected to provide a strong platform for India’s para athletes ahead of what could be a historic World Championships on home soil.
With rising talent, seasoned champions, and national aspirations at stake, all eyes will be on Bengaluru as the future of Indian para athletics takes center stage.
