Bengaluru: A woman was reportedly slapped and groped by a man after she declined his friend request on Instagram, police said, in an unsettling incident that has highlighted concerns about harassment stemming from social media interactions.
According to the complaint, the victim was approached online by an individual who sent repeated friend requests and messages. When she chose not to accept the request and ignored his advances, the man allegedly tracked her down to a public place in Bengaluru.
When she encountered him in person, the accused began harassing her. He reportedly slapped her and made unwelcome physical contact before bystanders intervened and alerted nearby police. The victim sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for a medical check-up.
Police said they have registered a case based on the woman’s statement and are investigating the matter. The accused has been detained and will be questioned as the investigation continues.
Authorities reiterated that online interactions should never be used as a justification for harassment or assault, and urged social media users to report any threatening behaviour immediately.
The incident has sparked concern among residents over safety in public spaces and the need for greater accountability in online communication. Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and urge witnesses to come forward to assist with the investigation as they work to ensure the victim receives justice.
