BENAULIM: In a nail-biting semifinal of the Benaulim Villagers Cup, Betalbatim Sports Club edged past Maina Sports Club 4-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout after both teams were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation time. The match was played at the St John the Baptist Panchayat Ground, providing a picturesque backdrop for an intense clash.
Maina SC took an early lead in the 11th minute through Joywin Carneiro, who rose above the defenders to head home a powerful goal off a well-delivered corner. However, Betalbatim responded almost immediately. Just two minutes later, Keith Rodrigues capitalized on a defensive lapse to lob the ball over the advancing keeper and level the score.
The second half was a high-tempo affair, with both sides creating chances but failing to convert. Betalbatim thought they had taken the lead when Afilio Fernandes found the back of the net, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
Clifford Miranda and Dickson Rogtao impressed for Betalbatim with their creativity and pressing, while Joywin Carneiro and Nikson Castanha continued to shine for Maina. In defence, Alison Rogtao stood firm for Betalbatim, making several crucial interventions.
With no winner in regulation time, the game was decided from the spot. Betalbatim’s goalkeeper emerged as the hero, pulling off two brilliant saves in the shootout to send his side into the final with a 4-2 scoreline in penalties.
Aniston Fernandes of Betalbatim SC was named Man of the Match, receiving the award from Anthony Pango, Vice President of the Goa Football Association.
Betalbatim SC will now gear up for a highly anticipated final as they chase the prestigious Benaulim Villagers Cup title.
