New Delhi: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party, branding it the “Bhrasht Janata Party” and alleging that its so-called double-engine governments have devastated people’s lives through corruption, abuse of power and arrogance.
In a strongly worded statement, Gandhi claimed that BJP-ruled states are witnessing a breakdown of governance where human lives have been reduced to mere statistics. He alleged that corruption has become deeply embedded in the system, operating openly under the banner of development, while the interests of the poor, workers and the middle class are routinely ignored.
Citing several high-profile incidents, Gandhi questioned the ruling party’s commitment to justice and accountability. Referring to the murder of Ankita Bhandari in Uttarakhand, he said the crime shocked the nation but raised concerns over whether influential individuals were being shielded. He asked when the law would truly be applied equally to all, regardless of status or political connections.
He also pointed to the Unnao rape case in Uttar Pradesh, stating that the episode exposed how power was misused to protect the accused and how painfully difficult the path to justice was for the victim. According to Gandhi, such cases reflect a culture of impunity fostered by political arrogance.
Expanding his criticism beyond crime, the Congress leader highlighted issues of public health and infrastructure. He referred to deaths caused by contaminated drinking water in Indore and complaints of polluted water supply in states such as Gujarat, Haryana and Delhi, claiming that fear of disease has become a daily reality for citizens. He further alleged that environmental destruction is accelerating as natural resources are exploited for private gain, resulting in deforestation, damaged hills and worsening pollution.
Gandhi also cited incidents involving deaths of children linked to contaminated medicines, newborns dying in hospitals due to negligence, collapsing school roofs and recurring infrastructure failures such as bridge collapses and train accidents. He argued that these were not isolated lapses but outcomes of systemic corruption.
Concluding his attack, Gandhi said the BJP’s double-engine model works swiftly only for wealthy corporate interests. For ordinary Indians, he claimed, it represents not development but destruction, eroding lives and livelihoods every day.
