MAPUSA: Ajay Gupta, one of the co-owners of the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub at Arpora, has approached a local court in Mapusa seeking regular bail in connection with the deadly fire incident at the club.
Gupta, who was arrested by the Goa Police in New Delhi, is currently in the custody of the Anjuna Police. His bail plea has been filed before the District Court in Mapusa, where he is being represented by senior advocate Rohan Desai.
According to court sources, the application is expected to be taken up for hearing later on Thursday, following which the court is likely to issue notices to the Goa Police to submit their response.
The arrest follows the fire that broke out at the Arpora-based nightclub on December 6, resulting in the death of 25 persons. The incident triggered a major investigation into alleged safety lapses and operational violations at the establishment.
So far, the Goa Police have arrested eight individuals in connection with the case. Among them are the three club owners — Ajay Gupta, Saurabh Luthra and Gaurav Luthra.
Other accused include Rajiv Modak, Corporate General Manager; Priyanshu Thakur, Gate Manager; Rajveer Singhania, Bar Manager; Vivek Singh, General Manager; and Bharat Karan Singh Kohli, an employee of the club.
