CALANGUTE: A disturbing incident unfolded at a popular restaurant in Calangute, where two intoxicated men brutally assaulted staff members after refusing to pay for the Biryani they had consumed.
The assault, which occurred on the evening of June 8, was captured on CCTV and has since sparked outrage in the community.
According to the victim’s account, the duo became aggressive when asked to clear their bill.
The altercation quickly escalated into physical violence, with the accused reportedly abusing and attacking the restaurant staff.
The assailants also allegedly claimed to have political backing and connections within the police and Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), raising concerns about influence being used to evade accountability.
The restaurant owner stated that the men were known to them and had previously visited the establishment, often leaving without paying. However, this was the first time they resorted to violence.
Calangute police have arrested one of the accused, while the second remains at large. The delay in apprehending the remaining suspect has drawn criticism from political leaders and locals alike.
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Amit Patkar condemned the police inaction, highlighting that over 60 hours had passed since the incident.
“Despite clear CCTV footage and witness accounts, one of the accused is still roaming free,” he said, demanding immediate action.
The police have assured that efforts are underway to trace the absconding accused and that no one will be spared, regardless of their claimed connections.
