Sancoale: A student of BITS Pilani, Goa campus has been placed under medical supervision after being found heavily intoxicated on the Vasco–Verna highway near the campus on Tuesday night. The incident came to light after a video of the inebriated student collapsed near a road divider went viral on social media on Wednesday.
In the clip, the student is seen lying by the roadside and unable to stand, as vehicles pass dangerously close. Three youth are seen assisting him to his feet, while a few locals express alarm at the potential risk of a serious accident. The person filming the video is also heard questioning how a student could be moving about in such a state outside the campus late at night.
The student was later escorted safely back to the BITS campus.
Confirming the incident, Arjun C. Halarnkar, Chief Manager of Public Relations at BITS Pilani Goa, told that the individual seen in the video is indeed a student of the institution.
“The student is under medical care and will be given an opportunity to explain his behaviour as per the institute’s disciplinary norms,” Halarnkar said.
He clarified that students are permitted to leave the campus after 5 pm on working days and throughout the day on holidays, but are required to return by 10:30 pm. “Any breach of these rules attracts disciplinary action in accordance with BITS procedures,” he added.
The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of BITS Pilani Goa, following a string of five student deaths within the past year, which had raised concerns over student welfare and safety on campus.
In response, the institution has tightened its security protocols, introducing gate-level parcel screening and installing over 600 CCTV cameras in hostels and corridors to improve surveillance and ensure student safety.
