VERNA: A BITS Pilani student was killed and another seriously injured in a tanker–motorcycle collision at Upasnagar, Birla, Verna, on Saturday evening.
According to police, the incident occurred on March 28 at around 5.15 pm when the accused tanker driver, Pedro Ivo Medeira of Raia, Salcete, was proceeding from Upasnagar towards BITS Pilani. On reaching near the IAV junction, the driver allegedly took a sudden right turn to enter a company premises without ensuring safety of oncoming traffic.
Police said a TVS motorcycle travelling from BITS Pilani towards Verna collided with the rear left tyre of the tanker. The rider, Karan Narasimha Murthy of Mysore, Karnataka, and pillion rider Soham Adhikari of Shantinagar, Ponda, both students of BITS Pilani, sustained grievous injuries.
Both injured were shifted to SGDH, Margao, where Karan Narasimha Murthy succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. The pillion rider Soham Adhikari was later referred to GMC, Bambolim for further medical treatment.
Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Carey Fernandes of Verna Police Station.
