New Delhi: In a stunning revelation, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva has accused former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of indulging in lavish spending on his official bungalow. The maintenance costs, which allegedly totalled Rs 29.56 crore from 2015 to 2022, have sparked demands for an inquiry into what the BJP claims to be exorbitant daily expenses of nearly Rs 1 lakh. This controversy unfolds amidst accusations of corruption against Kejriwal and heightens questions about accountability in public expenditure.
At the heart of this controversy are RTI documents suggesting Kejriwal’s official bungalow on Flag Staff Road saw significant investments for maintenance between March 31, 2015, and December 27, 2022. This translates to a monthly expenditure of approximately Rs 31 lakh, a figure that has raised eyebrows regarding potential misallocation of public funds. Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva labelled Kejriwal a “Master of Corruption,” calling for a thorough investigation into these expenses.
The maintenance costs covered a range of services including general repairs, sewage, electricity, and structural work for the bungalow. A citizen from Maharashtra had filed an RTI application to obtain these details, which were provided by the Delhi government on December 29, 2023. This disclosure has ignited a heated debate about transparency and accountability in government spending.
Moreover, Sachdeva’s criticism extends beyond Kejriwal, highlighting the need for a CBI probe into allegations of corruption against AAP leader Manish Sisodia in the education sector. The BJP continues to press for answers on the alleged misuse of resources, questioning the necessity of such high maintenance costs when a comparable new bungalow could be constructed for Rs 3-4 crore.
