MARGAO: In a scathing attack, Manisha Usgaonkar, General Secretary of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee on Tuesday attacked BJP government over failing to protect the dignity of women.
Manisha Usgaonkar along with Zilla Panchayat member Mrs Michelle Moreno Rebelo and Goa Adivasi Congress chairman Ramkrishna Jalmi addressed a press conference at Congress office in Margao and said that BJP government has failed in all aspects.
Praising the Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, Congress leader Manisha Usgaonkar said that the former opened the eyes of police over escort service websites and now they are taking action.
“Several escort websites are operating in Goa, which have spoiled the image of the state and also have created a picture that Goa is famous for escorts. However, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who also holds Home portfolio, had failed to identify these websites and take action. Police department swung into action only after our leader Yuri Alemao raised the issue,” she said.
“BJP brags of Nari Shakti and Beti Bachao Beti Padao, however this government has failed to respect women. It speaks about women reservation, but has failed to induct a woman legislature in cabinet. This exposes the double standard of BJP,” Usgaonkar said, adding women ministers would have understood it better and would have acted swiftly.
“Cabinet which has ministers with charges of rape and other offenses, will never work in the interest of women and public. Can we expect good social milieu from law breakers,” she questioned.
She warned to hit the roads if the police department fails to take action against all escort websites. “This action should not be for name sake, but we want all such websites to be blocked, as they damage the image of Goa,” she said.
Michelle Moreno Rebelo also attacked the BJP government for its failure to stop such websites from functioning. “This only proves that the intelligence of Goa police and the Information and Technology department have failed. They have no check on such activities, but they become super active when someone criticizes them and then lodge complaints against social media influencers,” Rebelo said.
Ramkrishna Jalmi said that escort websites bring a bad name to our rich cultured state. “We have seen how tourists dare to behave unruly with our sisters and locals as these websites project Goa as a hub of escort service. Government needs to block them using a double engine, if they fail then they should admit they have failed,” he said.
