Porvorim: BJP MLA Michael Lobo today raised critical questions in the Assembly over the state government’s handling of Goa’s airport operations, expressing concern over the lack of new international airlines at Dabolim Airport and the coexistence of the two airports—Dabolim and Mopa.
Lobo pointed out that despite earlier government assurances, no new international carriers have started operating from Dabolim Airport, a key gateway for Goa’s tourism and business sectors. He questioned whether a proper feasibility study had been conducted to ensure that both Dabolim and Mopa International Airports could function effectively without compromising each other’s potential.
The MLA also sought clarity on whether airlines have been shifted from one airport to another, which could be impacting connectivity and passenger convenience. His remarks came amid reports of Air India cancelling flights between London and Goa, causing alarm among travelers.
Reacting to the concerns, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the government would take up the issue with the Union Civil Aviation Ministry tomorrow to seek a resolution on Air India’s cancellations. He reiterated that both airports are important for the state’s growth and assured that steps are being taken to attract new airlines and upgrade infrastructure at Dabolim.
Sawant also highlighted recent measures by the Union Ministry, including a nearly 50% reduction in User Development Fee (UDF), Aviation Security Fee, and Landing Fees at Dabolim to encourage more airline operations.
“The government wants both Mopa and Dabolim airports to run smoothly,” the Chief Minister said, noting that the state has earned Rs 65.88 crore in revenue from Mopa Airport and that the airport now handles an additional 90-100 flights daily.
