DONAPAULA: BJP Leader Savio Rodrigues today has submitted a petition to the Goa Governor to urge the Goa government to set up a commission to study Catholic Churches in the state ruined during Portuguese.
Rodrigues, in his representation, has also urged to formulate plans for restoration by setting up a fund on the lines of the Goa government initiative to restore temples destroyed during Portuguese rule.
“A scheme by the government to restore temples destroyed by the Portuguese was a great move to preserve the Indic heritage and culture. Similarly, he said, a fund should be set up to preserve the heritage catholic churches as well,” said Rodrigues.
He further said that Catholic churches are a wonderful tourist attraction for people from the Christian community and people from different religious communities who marvel at its history, spiritual essence and architectural prowess.
Rodrigues also suggested a study could be initiated before commissioning the funds.
“We must endeavour to work with our Christian sisters and brothers to preserve our state’s historic catholic churches as they are an integral part of Goa’s rich and collective identity,” he said in the letter.
The BJP spokesperson also said that he was looking forward to the government’s continuous support to make Goa a “truly secular state”.
