MAPUSA: Tragedy struck near Revora when the body of Thomas Fernandes, 35, was retrieved from the Chapora River on Friday morning, a day after he went missing while fishing.
According to Colvale police, Fernandes, a resident of Tormas in Alorna‑Pernem, had gone fishing with friends on Thursday afternoon. His fishing net reportedly got caught underwater, and when he tried to free it, he slipped into the river and disappeared. Locals immediately alerted authorities.
Rescue operations were launched by teams from the Mapusa Fire and Emergency Services, in coordination with police and residents. Despite extensive searches through the night, Fernandes could not be found, and the efforts were temporarily halted.
On Friday morning, his body was spotted floating downstream and recovered by authorities. After formal documentation and a post-mortem at Goa Medical College, Bambolim, the body was handed over to the family.
The Chapora River, which forms part of the boundary between Pernem and Bardez talukas, is commonly used for fishing and other daily activities by locals.
