PANAJI: Minister For Forest Vishwajit Rane today said that his department would not be initiating any measure of getting a Tiger in the Bondla zoo as it does not have the required facility.
“We are not going to get Tiger in Bondla zoo as we don’t have the required facility,” said Rane.
He further said that he would instead propose a Tiger park or safari for which we are looking for land in Sanguem or Netravali.
“Setting up of Tiger park requires different policies and fencing, ” he added.
Bondla Zoo lost its former pair of tigers, Rana and Sandhya, in December 2016 and July 2017, respectively.
Both animals had lived to a ripe old age and died of natural causes. The pair had been procured from Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, Vishakhapatnam, in 2009.
Sources said the Forest Department focuses on promoting wildlife tourism and eco-tourism on a grand scale.
“This time, we don’t want to keep tigers in cages, but we want to set them free within designated zones, where we will conduct safaris for visitors,” sources said.
