In a bold move to combat animal cruelty and illegal transportation, the Valpoi Police have arrested two individuals for their involvement in smuggling buffaloes across the border. This incident unfolded on March 28, 2025, at 3:30 pm at the Keri Border Check Post, where alert police officers intercepted a suspicious vehicle, uncovering a shocking case of animal mistreatment.
The operation, led by Shri Devanand Gawade and Home Guard Shailesh Gaonkar, successfully intercepted a white Tata DI Pickup bearing registration number KA-26-A-1792. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the vehicle was carrying two she-buffaloes, two she-calf buffaloes, and two he-calf buffaloes, all being transported in inhumane conditions. The driver, Mr. Harshad Bepari, 24, and the occupant, Mr. Gouskadir Chowdhary, 40, both residents of Belgaum, were promptly booked.
A First Information Report (FIR) was registered under relevant sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act for subjecting the animals to cruelty and transporting them in such conditions. All the buffaloes were rushed to the Goshala at Mayem, Bicholim, for necessary care. The investigation is ongoing under the supervision of IO S. A. Kankubkar, with supervision from V. P Shirodkar and SDPO Jivba Dalvi.
