New Delhi: In a significant move to enhance India’s transportation infrastructure, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has greenlit four major multitracking railway projects worth approximately Rs 18,658 crore. These ambitious undertakings are designed to improve connectivity and transportation speed across 15 districts in Maharashtra, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, a strategic step in aligning India’s transport networks with global standards.
The projects will expand the Indian Railways network by approximately 1,247 kilometers, boosting the overall efficiency and capacity of passenger and freight services. Two of the key initiatives include the addition of third and fourth lines between Sambalpur and Jarapda, and between Jharsuguda and Sason. Moreover, the fifth and sixth lines will be constructed between Kharsia-Naya Raipur and Parmalkasa, alongside the doubling of the track between Gondia and Balharshah. These developments are poised to significantly enhance the logistical capabilities of the regions involved, making them more attractive for industrial investments.
As part of these projects, 19 new stations will be constructed to enhance connectivity to districts like Gadchiroli and Rajnandgaon. This strategic expansion is aligned with the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity, aiming to provide seamless movement of goods and services across the country. By enhancing employment opportunities and supporting industrial growth in these regions, the projects promise to transform the economic landscape by creating fertile ground for new businesses and industries. Notably, the Kharsia-Naya Raipur-Parmalkasa line will offer direct connectivity to areas like Baloda Bazar, fostering the establishment of industrial units, including cement plants.
Beyond their economic benefits, these railway projects also carry significant environmental advantages. By reducing reliance on less sustainable modes of transportation, they will decrease oil imports by 95 crore liters annually and lower CO2 emissions by 477 crore kilograms—equivalent to planting 19 crore trees. This shift towards cleaner rail transport aligns with India’s broader sustainability goals and positions the country as a leader in environmentally responsible infrastructure development.
