PANAJI: The State Cabinet on Thursday cleared the amendment to the law to make the change of surname more cumbersome.
An ordinance will be passed shortly to implement the change, said Law Minister Nilesh Cabral.
Henceforth, only those whose parents or grandparents were born in Goa will be able to change their surname. Also, the powers to approve a change in surname has been given to Session and District Judge.
There were complaints from some caste groups that many migrants who settle in Goa change their surname identical to theirs with vested interests.
