PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced that the State Cabinet has approved a set of ordinances to amend key local governance laws in order to facilitate smoother implementation of the ‘Mhaje Ghar’ housing scheme.
Speaking to reporters outside the Ministerial Block in Porvorim after an unscheduled cabinet meeting, Sawant said that the amendments to the Goa Panchayati Raj Act, the Goa Municipalities Act, and the Corporation of the City of Panaji Act have been cleared for promulgation.
According to the Chief Minister, the move aims to address “technical hurdles” that have delayed or complicated the rollout of the flagship housing initiative. “The objective of these ordinances is to streamline and expedite the implementation of the ‘Mhaje Ghar’ scheme,” Sawant stated.
He did not, however, go into specifics about the nature of the amendments or the timeline for their notification. Notably, the Chief Minister chose not to hold his customary post-cabinet press briefing, making only a brief statement to the media before leaving the Secretariat.
The ‘Mhaje Ghar’ scheme, one of the government’s key welfare programmes, seeks to provide affordable housing and legal ownership rights to Goan families. The latest amendments are expected to harmonize existing local governance laws to ensure uniform execution of the scheme across both rural and urban areas.
