PORVORIM: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said that the Calangute-Candolim coastal belt region currently faces a shortfall of nearly 10 million litres per day (MLD) in water supply.
Speaking to the media after meeting with Chief Engineer Pramod Badami of the Water Resources Department (WRD) at Porvorim, Lobo emphasized the severe water scarcity that the people living in the Calangute-Candolim coastal belt are facing.
Lobo further said that currently there is a shortage of almost 10 million litres per day (mld) of water in the area.
“With a goal of finishing by December, the WRD has accelerated the construction of the sump and water tanks. It will take an extra eight months to a year for the Public Works Department (PWD) to establish the filtration plant after that. Within a year, we hope to have the water treatment plant up and running,” Lobo said.
Lobo emphasized that the rising number of resorts and guest houses along the coast is to blame for the rising water demand in Calangute and some areas of the Saligao constituency.
According to Lobo, the project’s essential components, including the construction of the sump and water tanks, should be finished by December of this year.
He made the point that these businesses receive licenses from local panchayats, which are granted by the Town and Country Planning Department.
In light of the growing demand, he implored the government to guarantee a sufficient supply of power and water.
