Panaji: ‘Surajya Abhiyan’, supported by the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, has demanded a high-level probe into an alleged ₹10,000-crore illegal betting racket reportedly linked to the T20 World Cup final between India and New Zealand in Ahmedabad.
According to a press release issued on Sunday, Raibandar resident Dilip Shetye has filed a written complaint with the Panaji Police Commissioner and the Director General of Police, alleging the operation of a large illegal betting network through high-tech applications and offshore servers. A similar complaint has also reportedly been sent from Nagpur via email.
The organisation has urged authorities to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the alleged racket and identify links between local bookies and international betting syndicates. It also called for action by agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate and cyber-crime units to shut down hawala channels and digital payment gateways linked to illegal betting.
‘Surajya Abhiyan’ stated that large-scale betting related to cricket could harm India’s global reputation and affect the credibility of the sport if strict action is not taken.
The group further urged authorities to verify media reports related to the alleged network and dismantle the control centres of betting syndicates, adding that funds seized from such operations should be utilised for public welfare schemes.
Meanwhile, the organisation said it will continue to monitor the issue and pursue action in the interest of transparency and national integrity.
