CANACONA: The Canacona Block Congress Frontal Committees (CBCFC) have submitted a memorandum to the Chief Secretary of Goa, demanding an immediate halt to the movement of overloaded and over-speeding heavy vehicles, including mining trucks and trailers, on the accident-prone NH-66 stretch between Canacona and Margao.
The CBCFC pointed out that despite earlier restrictions imposed three years ago, heavy traffic of large commercial vehicles has resumed since last month, leading to daily accidents, severe congestion, and delays for office-goers, students, and even ambulances. They warned the situation could worsen during the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festivities.
The memorandum also accused operators of evading government taxes and questioned whether GPS devices in the trucks are functioning. It called for installing weighing machines at all state checkposts, strict enforcement by the Transport Department, traffic control at busy junctions, and a complete ban on heavy vehicles along the narrow Cuncolim–Canacona road until safety issues are addressed.
Copies of the memorandum were sent to the Governor’s Secretary, South Goa Collector, PWD, Transport and Mines Directors, police officials, and other local authorities. The document was signed by former Congress candidate Janardhan S. Bhandari and several party leaders representing various frontal organisations.
