CANACONA: The Gomantak Temple Federation (GTF) and Trustees of local temples have demanded a speedy investigation and bring the culprits to book for the thefts being committed at various temples in Canacona Taluka.
GTF and Trustees of Canacona temples have called on the Dy. Collector of Canacona Madhu Narvekar, Police Inspector of Canacona Harish Raut Desai and Police Inspector of Cuncolim Police Station, submitted memorandums demanding that the cases of theft in temples in Canacona should be investigated speedily, thoroughly and the culprits responsible for the thefts should be severely punished.
On submission of the memorandum Canacona Dy. Collector Madhu Narvekar said that he would organize a meeting immediately with the police officials to solve the issue of temple security.
Shri Nirakar Mandir, Maxem President Narayan Prabhugaonkar, Secretary Rajendra Warik, Keshav Mandir President, Loliem- Vithal (Pradeep) Prabhu Maliyar, Parashuram Panchaigram Devasthan and Shri Narasimha Temple Official- Gynananand Prabhu Gaonkar, Narasimha Temple, Raghuveer Komarpant of Sri Devgipurush Temple in Patnem-Colomb and representatives of Gomantak Temple Federation Ramanand Prabhu, Pradeep Painginkar, Govind Lolayekar were present while submitting the representations to the Administration and the Police.
The representation submitted to the authorities stated that lately in October 2024, unknown culprits entered the Garbhakudi of Sri Damodar Devasthan at Loliem (Canacona) and stole Rs 6,000. Thereafter, the burglars also broke open 6 fund boxes in front of the deities of Shri Mahadev, Shri Keshav, Shri Brahmadevi and Shri Maruti in the nearby temple of Shri Keshav Devasthan.
The memorandum further states that in Goa, a total of 6 temples were burgled in the year 2022, 14 temples in the year 2023 and so far burglars have targeted a total of 11 devasthans in the year 2024 taking away valuables and stolen cash from the temples.
‘It seems some gangs are organized to rob temples in the State, and due to this increasing trend of thefts in temples, the Temples are not safer. As the temples are places of worship of Hindu communities, it is high time, the sanctity of the temples should be protected, the representation demanded,
