CANACONA: A major accident occurred late Thursday evening on the Maxem-Galgibaga bridge at the start of the Manohar Parrikar Canacona Bypass Road (MPCBR), when an inter-state truck rammed into two motorcycles from behind, critically injuring one person.
The mishap took place as the two motorcycles, including a Yamaha and a Royal Enfield, were traveling slowly along the two-wheeler lane of the four-lane NH66 MPCBR, reportedly enjoying the scenic sunset view while heading towards Margao from Karwar.
The truck, bearing registration number NH48 AY3761, came from behind and first hit the Yamaha, throwing the rider off the vehicle. It then collided with the Royal Enfield, dragging the motorcycle for over 25 meters. Two riders on the Enfield managed to jump to safety moments before the impact, escaping unhurt. The Enfield, however, became lodged under the front bumper of the truck.
Eyewitnesses noted that after the truck came to a halt, there were visible attempts by the driver to reverse, leaving clear drag marks on the road from the entangled Enfield.
The critically injured rider was initially rushed to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Canacona and later shifted to South Goa District Hospital (SGDH), Margao for advanced treatment.
According to sources, the truck driver, who appeared visibly intoxicated, claimed that an oncoming vehicle on the one-way four-lane road forced him into the two-wheeler lane, leading to the collision. However, this explanation is being scrutinized, especially as the road section has two lanes on each side, and the driver’s condition raised serious concerns.
Canacona Police arrived at the scene, took the driver into custody, and sent him for a medical examination.
One of the Royal Enfield riders, who miraculously escaped unscathed, shared that their bike was only three months old, and they were en route to Margao from Karwar when the accident happened.
